Assessments ยท Personality and teams

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)

The MBTI assessment is a gateway to understanding, optimizing and harmonizing how a team works together. We use it with intact teams to improve conflict handling, stress management, work styles and communication.

  • MeasuresPreferences on four dichotomies (Extraversion or Introversion, Sensing or Intuition, Thinking or Feeling, Judging or Perceiving), reported as one of sixteen types.
  • Used forTeam development and team building, conflict management, stress management, work-style alignment and communication.
  • DebriefA facilitated team session with Anna Barnhill, MCC, built around a type map of the whole team, with individual feedback on request.

Discover your team’s true strengths

The MBTI assessment is more than a personality test. It uncovers the characteristics of your team members, shedding light on individual preferences, strengths and areas for development. Once a team understands its MBTI profiles, it can work with its differences instead of around them.

Published by The Myers-Briggs Company, the instrument is based on decades of research and has a long track record with teams and organizations worldwide.

Applications for team development

  • Conflict management. See how different types approach conflict and find strategies to work through disagreement constructively. Diverse perspectives become a source of better solutions.
  • Stress management. Identify how team members handle stress and pressure by type, and develop techniques that build resilience and well-being across the team.
  • Work styles. Uncover how your team prefers to work, make decisions and organize tasks, then use that knowledge to delegate well and streamline how work moves.
  • Communication styles. Recognize each member’s communication preferences to improve clarity, reduce misunderstandings and make collaboration easier.
  • Team building. Build a cohesive team by capitalizing on the strengths of each type, with balanced teams that complement each other.

The MBTI advantage

  • Proven effectiveness. Decades of research and use with teams and organizations worldwide.
  • Increased self-awareness. Team members understand themselves and their colleagues better, which improves empathy, teamwork and morale.
  • Tailored strategies. Specific recommendations for team dynamics, conflict and collaboration, not a generic type description.
  • A holistic view. Multiple dimensions of personality, considered together, rather than a simplistic label.

How a team session runs

  1. Each member completes the assessment online and receives an individual report.
  2. The team’s types are mapped together, so the distribution of preferences is visible at a glance.
  3. A facilitated session works the map against the team’s real situations: a decision it keeps circling, a meeting that drains everyone, a handoff that keeps breaking.
  4. Agreements and follow-up. The team leaves with two or three working agreements, and we check on them in a follow-up session.

Where the question is about interpersonal needs rather than type, we pair or replace the MBTI with the FIRO-B.
