What emotional intelligence is

Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand and effectively manage emotions, your own and other people’s. It is a set of emotional and social skills that influence how we perceive ourselves, express our thoughts and feelings, develop relationships, cope with challenges and use emotional information to make effective decisions.

It matters more as you rise. Senior roles are decided by influence, decisions under pressure and how you handle change, not by technical expertise, and that is exactly the territory emotional intelligence covers.

The instrument

The Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i 2.0), published by Multi-Health Systems, is one of the first scientifically validated and most widely used emotional intelligence instruments in the world. It draws on more than twenty years of research. Respondents self-report on fifteen areas of emotional skill shown to contribute to complex business activities such as conflict resolution and planning.

The 1-5-15 model

Five composite scales and fifteen subscales interact to predict behavior. The model is circular: each area of emotional intelligence influences the next.

  • Self-perception, how you understand and evaluate yourself: self-regard, self-actualization, emotional self-awareness.
  • Self-expression, how you express yourself and your emotions: emotional expression, assertiveness, independence.
  • Interpersonal, how you develop and maintain relationships: interpersonal relationships, empathy, social responsibility.
  • Decision making, how you use emotions in your thinking: problem solving, reality testing, impulse control.
  • Stress management, how you cope and stay effective under pressure: flexibility, stress tolerance, optimism.

The results are specific and measurable. They let you lean on strengths and put containment around any out-of-balance area that keeps you from using them fully. Emotional intelligence changes over time, so we re-measure at the close of an engagement to see what moved.
